MICHAEL ALAN SHELLENBERGER

2022 Tribute

Mike_edited_edited.jpg

Thank you for taking the time to get to know Mike Shellenberger, and learn a little about his health journey. Mike is a friendly, outgoing, carefree man whose journey began over 3 decades ago when he was initially diagnosed with lupus.  He has suffered many ups and downs commonly related to that disease and has always maintained a positive attitude and trusted his medical team.  This attitude and trust has continued on well beyond this initial diagnosis. Mike has powered through several invasive back surgeries/revisions while continuing to do one his favorite things, play golf. He taught me the game of golf when I was young and we carried on this tradition for many years now, playing several times a year and every Father’s Day.  We have played fewer golf rounds over the past three years as Mike was faced with persistent, undiagnosed gastrointestinal symptoms. In late 2021, Mike finally felt a sense of “relief” when he was diagnosed with duodenal cancer. I say “relief” because this is exactly how he viewed this stepping stone in his journey. He accepted the cancer diagnosis and pursued any type of treatment recommended to him because he not only wanted to get back on that golf course, but he was determined not to miss a single sporting event, school function, or offer to babysit any one of his 4 grandchildren.  Mike successfully underwent the Whipple procedure in February 2022 which surgically removed his tumor, clear margins, and portions of his bile duct, duodenum, pancreas, and small intestine.  His journey continued postoperatively where he received 4 cycles of chemotherapy spanning 3 months. In June, 2022, Mike finished his cancer treatment. Although he experienced many common side effects of chemotherapy including weight loss of over 45 pounds, he never once gave up hope, missed any of his grandkids milestones, and through it all kept a smile on his face.  Feeling better everyday (for the most part) and starting to regain his appetite, Mike and his family remain optimistic that he will be back on the golf course come next Spring if not before, and many more times thereafter.

A MESSAGE FROM BRIAN:

The motivation for this golf tournament stems from the loss of my mother, Barbara R. Dowell to cancer in January 2010. My mom was an amazing person who helped people look better and feel better about themselves. She practiced this everyday in her relationships. We want to honor my mom’s life, her wonderful successes and her passion for people.

Initially our family needed Wing of Hope for our own grieving & healing, and today we hope to pass that spiritual healing on to other Harford County families who have been affected by cancer. Join us in celebrating her life and others impacted by cancer and be a part of the superb opportunity to stand up to cancer.

Your participation CAN & WILL make a difference!
